The New Venture

Dear friends,

Many of you have been asking what Christine and I are going to be doing now that Moody is closing the Spokane campus the end of June. The following letter, which was sent out yesterday, frees us up to tell you what we believe the Lord is leading us to do in the coming months (years?).

I’m posting this on our website, and I will send out an email to anyone who has informed us that they want to be kept in the loop about our up-coming ministries. Needless to say, we are extremely excited about the Lord’s leading in this new Venture.

Dr. Tom Steffen, Board Chairman of Spokane International University, just sent the following letter to the Board of Directors of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.

Dear Mr. Fairfax,

Please allow me to Introduce myself: my name is Tom Steffen; I am the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the recently incorporated Spokane International University, a new Christian university located in Spokane WA. Formerly, my family and I were missionaries in the Philippines with New Tribes Mission for twenty years, after which I served another two decades teaching at the School of Intercultural Studies at Biola University. My colleagues and I, as well as many in the Spokane community, were saddened by the unfortunate announcement that Moody would close its Spokane campus this coming summer. It is a great responsibility to make such decisions when you are a steward of the Lord’s resources and we trust, as I know you do also, that God’s guidance and will has directed you down this road. We are praying for Moody and Moody’s Board of Trustees, for God’s perfect will to be manifested, and that glory will come to the Father through these things.

In the weeks after Moody’s announcement to close its Spokane campus, many in our community have sensed that God’s work in Biblical higher education is not yet finished in Spokane. Indeed, after Moody’s announcement, a group came together for the purpose of establishing a new university that would, God willing, pick up where Moody has left off. Toward that end we have successfully incorporated in the State of Washington, and are currently in process to gain degree-granting authority, as well as status. We have every reason to believe that Spokane International University will be prepared to offer classes for the 2018-2019 academic year that begins this coming Fall.

In many ways, Moody Bible Institute’s rich legacy of kingdom work has been our inspiration to pick up the burden of this work. We have seen the eternal benefit that our community has received over the years by Moody’s presence in Spokane, and the continued need for Biblical higher education in our community resonates deeply with us. To that end it is our intention to continue programs of biblical studies that have been traditionally offered by Moody, such as the Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, as well as expanding into other areas of professional studies.

As Moody begins its final semester in Spokane, please be assured that we are praying for healthy transitions for your staff and students, as well as continued wisdom for you and the rest of the Board and administration at Moody. We would likewise ask for your prayers, for us as we continue to pursue God’s calling on our lives, and for Spokane International University as we strive to serve the Spokane community.

Respectfully and cordially yours,

Tom Steffen, DMiss
Chairman, Board of Trustees
Spokane International University

Randy Fairfax, the Chairman of Moody’s Board responded immediately:

Tom [Steffen]

Thank you for your note and the information regarding Spokane International University.

Yes as you might understand decisions we made concerning the Spokane campus are very difficult and a great deal of time has been spent seeking to understand how to best steward the resources God has entrusted to us through prayer and counsel.

It would be wonderful if you are able to continue providing a solid bible teaching University in Spokane.

I can assure you that you will have my prayers and we will be praying for you as a board that God might grant you favor in this work.

Thank you for your prayers on our behalf and for your efforts in this Kingdom work you have shared with me and through me to our board.

My our God be glorified.

Randy Fairfax
